Measurement of the Process of W Production with off-shell W Bosons in the ATLAS detector

 

About Jesal

I graduated with an MSci in Physics from Queen Mary, University of London where I am now also a PhD candidate.My Master's project was with Dr. Teppei Katori in which I was researching high energy neutrinos in Hyper-Kamiokande. I used C++ and ROOT to analyse simulations in order to determine what the sensitivity will be to high energy neutrinos. This project provided me with experience to gain a Summer Student Placement at CERN. Whilst at CERN I attended the lecture series for summer students which covered a huge variety of topics in Particle Physics including data science

topics such as Machine Learning. My project was developing a physics analysis for one of the prototypes for DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) called protoDUNE-SP (protoDUNE Single-Phase). This involved writing an algorithm based on simulations using C++ and ROOT where I focused on looking at beam matching and the space-charge effect which led to developing a simple preliminary calibration for the experiment. My research now is on off shell W bosons at the ATLAS detector at CERN. Particle physics involves handling very large datasets and so this project is a perfect fit for the DISCnet CDT.

What is your research?

At the LHC, production of off-shell W bosons at large momentum transfer is sensitive to new physics, and proton structure. Precision measurements of the Drell-Yan process in neutral and charged current channels will help to constrain the proton Parton Distribution Functions (PDF's), will allow model-independent effective field theory coefficients to be extracted, and will allow a measurement the width of the W Boson.

What have you done in the first 6 months?

I've completed some initial studies looking at the Drell-Yan process in MadGraph. I have also completed the high energy physics postgraduate University of London lecture series and have completed the examinations for this too. Currently I have been working on doing a kinematics study using Monte-Carlo data. When the W decays into a lepton and a neutrino, the neutrino isn't observed. Therefore, the W invariant mass cannot be fully reconstructed so I am currently working on a method to determine the invariant mass of off-shell W bosons. The next step will be to move on to looking at the ATLAS 2015-17 dataset.

Why did you chose a DISCnet funded PhD?

The DISCnet CDT hosts training sessions approximately every month which have been very informative and enjoyable. They had already provided me with useful knowledge for my PhD and am sure they will continue to do so. I have also accepted a summer placement which I gained through DISCnet working at Gresham Investment Management. I look forward to applying the skills I have developed in Particle Physics and Data Science to solve problems in other disciplines too.
